Soft Pretzel

These pretzels were absolutely amazing! They were soft and chewy on the inside with the authentic thin pretzel crust on the outside. They are great plain with a bit of salt or coated with cinnamon sugar. They are a perfect snack for game night!

Soft Pretzel

  • 1 ½ cups Water at 110 degrees
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp Salt
  • 1 package Active Dry Yeast
  • 2 Tbsp Melted Butter
  • 4 ½ cups All Purpose Flour
  • 6 cups Water
  • 1/3 cup Baking Soda
  • Egg Wash / Milk 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp of water, optional

  1. In a large bowl, add the warm water, sugar and yeast and stir well. Let this sit for 5 mins until the yeast foams up.
  2. To this add the flour and butter and combine well until you have a smooth dough.
  3. Brush the bowl with vegetable oil and put the dough in the oiled bowl. Cover and place in warm spot for nearly an hour and let rise.

  4. Add 6 cups of water and the baking soda into a wide pan and place this over medium heat. Let this come to a rolling boil.
  5. Once the dough has risen, cut it into 12 equal pieces, roll each piece into a rope. Make a U shape and then press the ends of the rope at the bottom of the U-shape. Place the shaped pretzels onto an oiled baking sheet.

  6. Place the pretzels into the boiling water for exactly 1 minute, one at a time. Remove from the boiling water with a slotted spoon and place on a parchment lined baking tray. Brush the pretzels with an egg wash and sprinkle a little salt on the top.
  7. Bake these in a preheated oven at 180 degree celsius for 10-12mins or until golden brown.
  8. Optional: Coat them in cinnamon sugar or just top them with some sesame seeds.
