These pretzels were absolutely amazing! They were soft and chewy on the inside with the authentic thin pretzel crust on the outside. They are great plain with a bit of salt or coated with cinnamon sugar. They are a perfect snack for game night!
- 1 ½ cups Water at 110 degrees
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 ½ tsp Salt
- 1 package Active Dry Yeast
- 2 Tbsp Melted Butter
- 4 ½ cups All Purpose Flour
- 6 cups Water
- 1/3 cup Baking Soda
- Egg Wash / Milk 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp of water, optional
In a large bowl, add the warm water, sugar and yeast and stir well. Let this sit for 5 mins until the yeast foams up.
To this add the flour and butter and combine well until you have a smooth dough.
Brush the bowl with vegetable oil and put the dough in the oiled bowl. Cover and place in warm spot for nearly an hour and let rise.
Add 6 cups of water and the baking soda into a wide pan and place this over medium heat. Let this come to a rolling boil.
Once the dough has risen, cut it into 12 equal pieces, roll each piece into a rope. Make a U shape and then press the ends of the rope at the bottom of the U-shape. Place the shaped pretzels onto an oiled baking sheet.
Place the pretzels into the boiling water for exactly 1 minute, one at a time. Remove from the boiling water with a slotted spoon and place on a parchment lined baking tray. Brush the pretzels with an egg wash and sprinkle a little salt on the top.
Bake these in a preheated oven at 180 degree celsius for 10-12mins or until golden brown.
Optional: Coat them in cinnamon sugar or just top them with some sesame seeds.
